I received my novice ticket in 1970, and was assigned WN8HZG. After upgrading to General my call became WB8HZG (of course). With a call like that, any question why I was primarily a phone operator in the early years? It took more time to send my call than the exchange! Since then I've had KP4FCL, KE6EW, NX1T, GM0/NX1T (four years in Scotland), W8UR (a short excursion back to 8 land), NX1T (again) and now KY4F. With my move to Kentucky, it became obvious that a call sign change was needed. Too many requests for section repeats!!
My biggest contesting thrill was winning November SS CW from the Maine section (Low Power) in 1991. At that time I set the section record in the low power category using only an R5 vertical and a half size G5RV. I also won the Scotland Low Power Single Op title in the 1992 CQ WW CW test.. Fun days. Recently I've reconnected with my long time friend and CW inspiration, K4TD. Rick and I first met in Puerto Rico while serving in the Navy way back in 1976. 30 years later we're still kids playing radio. K4TD was kind enough to introduce me to VE7ZO and NQ4I. I'd like to thank Rick (NQ4I) for allowing me to become part of the team!
